Australian Building Styles and Culture Research -NGO

Having European influences is a nice thing as Australian heritage. Australia has European heritages because most Australians have the European backgrounds. Australian cultural heritages are special to Australian people and good to preserve. Nobody want to build like these things anymore but they have history to tell. Every building has a story to tell but national heritages have special stories worth to learn from and taken into a new phase. They are there and should be around for as long as a country exists. It must have resources to maintain them even if they are in expensive locations good for redevelopment ideal for economic application. Even if nobody visits these sites, they should exist because they have histories. A country should keep producing such special buildings as its culture. However, it's not enough only to have special buildings.

It would be wonderful if there is an non governmental organization focusing on building styles in Australia and its primary work is the research and design development on architecture and building types for Australian culture and Australian conditions because every people and every country should have unique culture, style, ideology and identity formed with culture, style and ideology that the entire nation can identify itself with. There are real advantages in having such identity.

A country can choose to have own cultural styles and ideology. Some countries deliberately gave up their identities. Some countries have been forced to compromise and accept foreign identity.

Some countries reestablished their identity after they lost it to certain ideological influence and avoided from being controlled by a foreign authority. Some countries avoided losing their identity by manipulating or creating the counterfeit version of the outside influence which was too powerful to defy. Why did they do that?

There are real advantages in having own identity. It is about the maturity of a country. It displays the cultural development, rich ideology and the real strength of its people. Identity employs the people so it's economically necessary. Identity moves the people with cultural activities. Identity gives the strength to the unity of a people so they can last long as they have the ideology and chauvinism to defend themselves. Identity represents a people who they actually are. It is cultural identity. It is more meaningful than I can ever think of.

Uniqueness has made some cultures to be respected, to come and learn from and to be pursued and followed. It is good for the people who have them in terms of acceptance and economy. Identity can unify a people of different groups. It is not impossible to make a different group to follow another group's identity. However, if only a common identity is there for them, they could be more united.

Instead of borrowing styles from all over the world, it will be great if the people are interested in having their own unique designs, architecture and building types. It is a bad habit only to borrow and not developing own because copying doesn't make self esteem but the opposite. The whole world but some have little to show off their cultures. Yet, it's still a time when copying is rampant.

Australia is a very special country in science and knowledge. It can have its own unique designs not found elsewhere. Naturally such distinction in culture is a gradual process. Moving the whole country is not simple and easy. But there is easier one to start with. It is home design which the Australians can gradually adapt. This is by no means making a point that existing designs and styles are inferior.

Not driven by economy and commercial interest, a non profit organization can exist to be developing new building designs just right for Australia with Australian features if the governments and the industry are helping, especially ABCB. This can produce some Australian designs. It can also produce architects and building designers specializing in such designs. Not just adapting BCA but also developing designs can be beneficial in long term.

To employ young designers and students of architecture for work experience and further training in environmental and cultural education, solely about Australia with its regional context, this organization will become very supportive and a very important employer. If it employs, with award level wages, many new designers will find something to do, have experience and earn. It's possible to employ a hundred or more graduates both from TAFE and university. If all states and territories support this organization in their own areas, they can give jobs to new designers. These designers will one day produce very fine cultural artifacts. Instead of becoming unemployed and live of newstart income, the federal government can employ these youths with the same amount of support. It is possible to attract some of the best students and (retired) professionals.

Multiculturalism is good. However, it shows the lack of commonness or the identity which represents all. The identity that is justified to represent all should not bias.

Hum In My Ears

Hum Experience

The sound is like nonstop bell ringing. The sound is not of metal but glass, very sharp and its tones are so close. At night, it is stronger because of silence. So whenever it is quiet, it rings louder. If concentrate on it, it gets louder. Sometimes tones change and become a different frequency. This change is very clear. Sometimes the ears are blocked by the tones sometimes the ear is open and frequency change. That’s what I remember for now.

The Start

It started when I was still very young, about 15 in Burma. I read a meditation article and it said the ringing can appear when the concentration becomes stronger. And soon I noticed it happened to me. It never left me ever since.

Emotion

First I didn’t feel bad about it. However, sometimes later it became something serious and made me stressed. I felt like being imprisoned. It was still bearable. It lasted until I accepted it and not resisting anymore. I became to accept it because I had no choice but to calm my mind and control it not to feel too bad. Now understand the two conditions of mind and I try not to let go of my mind to the wrong side.  

Physical Symptom

I always feel my ears are blocked. I have to pick the ear web very often. When I was young, my ears were not oily. I saw my friend ear oily and I thought it might be good and it became to happen to me. I was told to pick the ear web when I was young. I did it often and even hurt my ears. Water got into the ears often. It seems the shape of the ears is not water proof. Actually I wash my head everyday and this could be the case causing water to get in. I think my hair and ears are naturally oily.

Its Effect in My Life

Often I lose concentration when I am listening to something because I am hearing the hum and what I’m listening to appear unclear. People sometimes asked me to learn to listen because I appeared not listening. Yes, I was not listening properly because I couldn’t hear properly. It’s more disturbing when answering the phone. But I can still hear though as the hum is only distracting. As I don’t listen much, I became to speak more and think more. And now I usually write my ideas down.

As Meditation Object

I sometimes listen to the hum. The more attention I pay to it, the louder it becomes. And it is also enjoyable. I think it’s good to listen to it and use it for a good reason. 

As I can't stop hearing it, now I'm hearing it in my left ear. When the environment is quiet, I can hear hum in both ears. Expensive experience.  

Hypocrisy

It’s a very common word. It’s been defined as it’s been used in many ways. But I think it needs explained once again because I think I have slightly different views. I rather give it simple supplementary explanation.

Once I learned about three common hypocrisies:

1.      Aging: everyone is a subject of aging and gradually getting older and certainly has become or will become an old person – the closer to death, the less physical beauty. By knowing the fact, whether with negligence or denial, if someone loathes an old person, then this is hypocrisy.

2.      Illness: it’s same as above. Everyone is a subject of illness and pain. Whether getting a severe disease or a simple headache or even lighter illness such as skin rush or just mosquito bite, all living things are equal for this reason. By knowing this fact, whether by negligence or denial, if a person loathes an ill person, this is also hypocrisy.

3.      Death: everyone fears of pain. The reality is death is also a pain. We’re all going to die one day – even if young now. Yet some people tend to loathe the dead body. This is also hypocrisy if not comparing with one’s own body and loathing it also. We know a living body keeps dying every moment and the hair, the finger nails, toe nails, dead skin, fat (or oil), and all sort of evidences are always indicating the truth.

These three are from the Buddha Himself. Maybe I’ve missed some information which is also important. Perhaps there is the forth: dirtiness caused by wastes coming out of the body. But I rather give my own points of view based on what I’ve learned so far.

We cannot be free from hypocrisy because of emotions – the human nature of psychology. Greed, anger, delusion, pride and jealousy are the very reasons because they make us to overlook ourselves.

Someone becomes greedy because of something valuable. Otherwise, that person would be normal – although that person has not abandoned greed completely. That is the way how greed appears, comes out of its domain, and does its activity. But we, with little ignorance, know greed is bad and will definitely oppose others for their greed yet we can become greedy. At the moment when greed is present, a person is hypocrite. 

Anger, pride and ignorance appear, come out of their own domains, and do their activities – just that way too. But we know, with little ignorance, how bad anger is. When we get angry, we’re both angry and hypocrite.

Ignorance is the very reality we cannot avoid. Nobody can know everything when we do something. Ignorance itself doesn’t make us hypocrite directly but it supports greed, anger, pride and jealousy and so there is hypocrisy.

All conscious living organisms are not free from these realities. If we get greedy or angry and do not dislike ourselves and correct our minds, that is a practice of hypocrisy.

Here jealousy and envy are also hypocrisy. They are based on selfishness so they’re selfish hypocrisy – sounding much worse. More than that, covetousness is a real problem as it’s about wanting others’ properties – any or all of money, wealth, position, love, just anything at all. Here healthy competition itself falls into this category as raising/fixing the price to make bigger profit can be immoral covetousness.

So is there anything left which is not hypocrisy? Of course just remove the selfishness and delusion; anything can be done without hypocrisy this way. Whatever action taken from the self perspective, like I do it, I want it, etc. can be tainted with hypocrisy because immoral self-interest could be there; otherwise it’s moral and not hypocrisy.

Fire burns because it gets fuel. Material things are fuel for greed, anger, pride, jealousy and ignorance. If someone doesn’t consider these realities and loathe others for their greed, anger, pride, jealousy and ignorance, then that’s hypocrisy. When one has yet to have abandoned these hypocrisies, disliking others for having any hypocrisy, one is obviously hypocrite.

Why should a person who has greed of his/her own criticise someone else for having/showing greed? Why can a person criticise others’ anger, pride, jealousy and ignorance?

We want to be intelligent, smart, have everything, famous, loved, cared, looked after, followed, safe, moral, satisfied, pleased, happy, want to be treated well and nicely, and all sort of good quality of life are wanted. Why can one harbour such bad emotions if one is not totally lacking self-control and hopelessly ignorant?

Criticising, judging others, and not criticising and judging oneself, it’s a way of practicing hypocrisy. But it’s better to judge and analyse oneself because one can improve oneself this way.

But we should pardon the nature of politics because we need a peaceful society in which political activities must exist healthily. If politicians have the condition to practice their best and serving the common interests, then what will we say?- it’s what we actually want as a society.

If a person practices hypocrisy willingly than that person is immoral. It’s hard to control the mind but it’s good to have not sped and crushed. We cannot expect animals and other organisms to practice morality. But as intelligent beings, we humans can know and have conscience. It’s always great to increase conscience.

Ignorance is actually the predominant factor of all existence and occurrence. The dark shadow of ignorance casting by all individual living organisms is so vast that we have to live in the dark most of the time. This way we actually affect one another with borrowed ideas. That shadow is the great shadow of life. We each casts a little shadow and make it big blanketing black shadow of oneness so fearsome that it engulfs everyone. That’s actually our own contribution as a global society of the world. Whatever we do, act, say... is not free from our ignorance – meaning we’re not perfect and our actions cannot be perfect ideologically even when the action is the only right thing to do; still we do it with delusion more or less. The contribution of our ignorance we make to one another is what we actually have in common. Not all of us are just like that though. Sometimes sages come and shine the light of truth. Whenever such a sage appears, we rather not miss his/her teachings. 

Two Halves Make One

We coexist.
We need each other.
We make a life in a world. We might not be unique but we don't need to know another world. We make contentment. We make understanding, agreement and share of investment. We invest everything known by us, owned by us and limited to us.

We don't want to live in a world that is only half - imagine if we have the halved earth! It cannot be beautiful. It can't be working. It can’t be meaningful. It can’t be for us. We must live a world that is full, a whole, marvellous...

That’s how we need both of us
That is to exist as long as we exist
That is to last as long as we last
That’s how we share
We give up to possess
Only to possess ourselves
But we only possess each other to give, even more and more,
We are to fertilize the shoots of love inside each other’s hearts
We will make it grow well
We must


But we must not be attached to each other.
We are individuals with differences.
We must be always being aware that we have invested these differences to make them into a good use. We have our freedoms that are also invested in our world.

We must recognize we are only the length that we live. We must accept the reality of each other. And from this we must grow, mature and become wiser... simply for each other.

Everyday we live and we live for the good of us, the wisdom we can share that is also reinvested in our world.

That is the purpose of our lives.
We are who we are and must not be changed by nonsense. We must be always open to each other but not to nonsense.

That is because we want the beautiful world.

Ten Enigmas

I’m not sure how many people have asked the same questions before. But I know some of the questions I’m asking have been asked. And so my questions are just complementing them. I’m not trying to change the world or anything like that. It’s just a work to inspire the readers to have fun for a while. Adding more questions will be great. Questions just come to everyone anyway. I think questions are fun; especially for the truth seekers! Questions based on reason encourage free thinking I think – although no thought can ever actually free as we have to base a thought on something existing which encourages us to ask. And it’s more than fun when our thoughts inspire ourselves for good – if inspire others as well, then it’s a bonus. So these are only ten questions (to become enigma, they must not be answered).

1. Based on a classic question: If what God doesn’t create cannot exist either physically or mentally (such as thought, etc), did God create evil on purpose?
a) Then does God want people to avoid evil His creation deliberately?
b) Then God did create evil to exist – as evil, evil doers, and the devil?
c) Does that mean God wants people to fight against evil or just avoid it?
d) Is that Free Will?
e) If yes, God created Free Will as well?

2. If Free Will exists:
a) If Free Will is created by God, is it really FREE?
b) Then God is not controlling anyone?
c) Then God is not showing everyone to see the good and not evil?
d) Or does God show good to someone and evil to another?
e) God doesn’t show good or bad to anyone but the good shows what is good and the devil shows what is bad?

3. If God is the same, why are heavens different?
a) Do Christians go to Jesus’ heaven, Jews to Judaist heaven (the abode of Jehovah the God of Israelites), and Muslims to Islamic heaven?
b) If so then what’s the point arguing and fighting as they are just destined to different heavens?
c) Do different Christianities go to different Heavens?
d) And different kinds of Muslims – such as Shiites, Sunni! Do they go to their different heavens too?

4. God is just:
a) Then do all people get the same rewards in different Heavens?
b) Do both kids and adults get the same rewards?
c) Do both males and females get the same reward?

5. Is a religious culture on Earth the same to the religious on a heaven?
a) Then does a heaven have different religious cultures of its own? i.e. Catholics have different Catholic cultures – for example.
b) Do priests become priests in heaven?
c) Do monks, etc become what they were as humans in heaven?
d) Or do all people become just the same – in justness and fairness unlike on earth?
e) Then do both male and female become equal in heaven?
f) If not, do man and woman become not to need being equal?

6. Heaven has eternal life for everyone:
a) Can God cease eternality from anyone He thinks an evil doer?
b) Then heaven is only for the good because heaven is perfect for everyone who gets there?!
c) Satan or a certain powerful evil committed sin and was sent to hell from heaven:
i. Then can there be another such evil doer? If not why not?
ii. If a person can become evil doer, does it support the claim ‘heaven is perfect and only for the good’?
iii. As long as God exists, as long as heaven exists, as long as hell exists, do more and more creatures go to hell for mistakes and unforgivable sin?!

7. God created heaven to be perfect but He did not create His angels, archangels etc to be perfect:
a) Why doesn’t heaven have everything perfect?
b) What is the definition of perfection in religious view?

8. A child dies and arrives to heaven, In this scenario, the child is either male or female:
a) Does the child keep growing into adulthood?
b) Does the child can get married later with its opposite sex?
i. If yes, does the child have to take a role, duty and lifestyle which are similar to of the earth?
c) Does the child maintain the traditional values it was born in?
i. If circumcision is to be performed to the child but the child died before that, does that child still require circumcising?
d) Does the child require learning the religious scripture?
e) Is a family in heaven allowed to have children of their own?

9. An old person dies and gets to heaven:
a) Does that old person maintain the age?
b) Does that old person get freed from old age – if that person desires?
c) Or can that old person change into any age at all any time?

10. If the good go to heaven and the bad to eternal hell, Gehenna, Jahannam, Jaina,
a) how does the earth need to be destroyed?
b) Is the earth to exist eternally at all?
c) Is the earth to exist with nobody on its surface but in hell only – in the Abrahamic view?

Average human consumption of resources in a lifetime is significant. As one lives, one must consume and get a share small or huge. Minimum is still significant to other life forms – even if you’re a vegetarian. A person needs an area to live in, some food, some water, some fresh air, some fuel, some carbon-footprint and some amount of fun. A vegetarian needs some plants on which other living things can rely on too. So a share is a share whether small or large.

The concept of nirvana is to give up that little share completely. Then other living things can share that tiny amount. Just think about both a whale carcass and a dead microbe – they both can be consumed by many.

To gain nirvana, a person gradually gives up his share he gains by any means. And when one has done by giving up the share, one achieves nirvana. In this case, the craving for the share has to be given up completely too. Giving up the share cannot be completed if the crave for a share is still remained.

The Buddha emphasized three kinds of cravings: the craving for materials and the sensual things, the craving for being or life and the craving for higher life-form, such as divinity; and each craving is the desire for a share. This is what to know.

Hence, there are the condition for desire and the condition for the need for desire – as a fact of the existence. Desire is just desire and common to every living being. The condition for the need for desire is also belongs to every living being. Upon these two factors, the existence has all the lures for both higher intelligence and lower intelligence. As for scientists, the complexity of existence is the lure; for a poet and writer, the beauty of words, the beauty of information and the beauty of creation are the lure; and for a tiny fish, a worm attached to the hook is the lure.

So the universe or the great existence is just us the beings and lures – nothing else. Maya is the word for lure which I learned when I was young and didn’t understand well then. Whether craving to know, or craving to have – whether for good or bad – are attached with strings with hooks but one is like the needle that injects medicine and the other poison.

It seems all the lures for both low and high intelligence are attached to hooks that have hooked the hearts of the beings. The reason for the hooks is when we remove or cut the lure or run out of the lure, we get hurt inside – and well, we crave for more. To a scientists, being unable to study the complexity hurts. To a poet, being short of words hurts. And to a tiny fish, the actual hook hurts. And each heart is hooked by countless hooks and hooked by the same hooks countless times. And being with more hooks those inject poison than those inject medicine is very painful.

Removing each hook seems really painful. But each hook in the flesh indeed hurts very painfully. However, a wound seems to be normal until the nurse comes and clean it up and put certain medicine, the pain becomes unbearable again – and that seems the reason why people don’t like the hooks removed to heal their wounds. At the same time, the hooks are pulled by the lures. Well, the lures are both inside the heart and out there.

Imagine an image of a person being his heart hooked and the lines are attached to the lures out there near and afar. Right now I can see myself this way –
And I’m craving for my share everyday!
Hooks look really shiny and beautiful although the lines are ugly and awful...

Dancing or fighting peacock, I don't take either side, I don't discriminate, I don't think we must divide ourselves with such ideological disunity. That view of making devision amongst ourselves should be left behind... I do believe that.

Just consider why the communists didn't believe how Burma was not independent yet even after the declaration of independence on 4 January 1948. The reason is they were not the one who made that independence occurred. So they fought on ... but who did they fight against ... after the British had left completely? Yes, who were their targets? And their revolution went on ... selfishly... systematically to destroy ... the country ... like Polpot did!!!!!

And why did General Aung San left the army and became a politician? He could have become a dictator ... like General New Win!!!!


Well, are we all aware of how to be realistic?

Political pragmatism... (let different views face on)

I believe we must dare to see! We must dare to be honest - even if in silence.
What to see? What is that we have to be honest about to ourselves?
The causes of and the causes that keep our problems. The causes that don't give us victory. The causes that give us defeats again and again!

Just have the guts to be honest to yourselves!!!

Democracy is not an ism. It's how the reality of the world is. Whether you look a prosperous country or a ruin one, you can find how people decide the way they want to be ... and what exploits their way of thought and how they have been. And think about Burma after that... think about Burma only after you look the wider world first.

Democracy is not an ism but it's the way of life. You can see the quality of different democracies. Some people have good democracy and some have bad democracy. All of them are the reality of the world. And Burma has some chaotic thought patterns of different leaders, activists and the general. Maybe not a strange thing... some are systematic, some are idealistic, some are pragmatic and some/or most are just mixed.

Then how about you?

I rather be pragmatic even if it's not easy for everyone to practice "practical changes".

My understanding of Political Pragmatism is simple. Find the problems, and find the causes of these problems and find the solutions. Knowing problems doesn't lead to finding solutions directly. You must find the causes of problems... and you must be courageous and honest! With an open mind, you find the solutions.

I don't know whether General Aung San was pragmatic or just following the rules - not to govern the nation in military uniform. If he was just pragmatic, then yet he was not pragmatic enough in one situation - he left the military in the hand of a corrupt. Maybe he didn't have much chance to do it differently - then why?

As we all know Burma was never really Burma. Not even now. It's a union of different ethnics who thought they didn't want to be in the union forever. Why? That can be still the same - the reality now. Why? Assume it as the reality and find the cause ... Do we have to? We all know they are asking for better treatment, equality and not being discriminated in any form. And their solution is? Civil War!

What has civil war served anyway? What has it produced? What is its reality in general appearance? And its future?
Isn't it civil war what has backfired the ethnics? Far from achieving their ambitions, all they have gained is the ruin of all ... and yet they don't even get simple recognition amongst themselves!

Can we learn how to be pragmatic? And become more and more pragmatic?

Pragmatism doesn't need to overlook idealism. IDEALISM POLITICAL doesn't need to be thrown into the bin... Pragmatism is to make use of everything available pragmatically.

The Torch of Wisdom

Wisdom is something you have to make time to time.

Fire is always everywhere but to get the flames of your own, you have to make it where you need it with some firewood, sticks and a match.

Wisdom is just like the fire and constantly present as the law of nature. To have a flame of wisdom, you have to make it where you need it. With knowledge, experience and skills that make a man wise, that wise man can make a flame of wisdom when he needs.

A wise man collects knowledge as ingredients for conscience. By knowledge, he strengthens his common sense. With his common sense, he leads a life within ‘the law of the natural morals’ that applies to all mankind and living things. With moral practices, he gains self-control. With self-controls, he develops confidence in his views and concepts as he gradually straightens and tunes up his ideas to align with ‘the laws of nature’. Confidence is energy that can be changed into will power or determination. A weak determination can grow into a stronger determination with more knowledge, more skill, more awareness and more understanding. Once his views are tuned in to the nature or the way of the Existence, he can see the right things amongst the wrong ones.

That is the first stage of the law of wisdom.

As he gradually understands, the law of nature, he can make the flame of wisdom when he needs.

The second stage of wisdom is the harder one. Not all wise men were able to reach this. That is the state of one is being the way one knows.

To have wisdom is quite easy. Tuning up one’s views and concepts with the laws of nature is a lot easier. It can be done as a hobby; and with a habit, one can gain some skill for judgement as making the flame of wisdom. This first stage indeed needs lots of learning and practices.

The second stage - to make oneself into a flame of wisdom is hard. To conquer own ‘natural resistance of fixed egoism lost in complications of misperception’ against the law of nature is hard. An actual wise man tries to achieve just that – to be the way of the law of nature – to overcome the obstacles of unskilled condition. With gradual practice, one may become the skill itself.

The skill is the state in which one doesn’t need judgement anymore; but just like reciting a book, one can know exactly what is right and wrong. That is how one may be the flame of wisdom or the torch of wisdom.

In this state, the flame of wisdom doesn’t make a wrong statement ever again.

1. The law of natural morals is part of the law of nature based on the concept that
a. The nature is mixed with sets and singles. A set is made of two opposing conditions and two neutral conditions to be known as both and either. For examples, ‘right, wrong and neither’, ‘good, bad and neither’, ‘pain, pleasure and neither’, ‘punishment, reward and neither’, etc.; the singles are things (e.g. man, head, finger, toe, tree, fruit, flower), names, etc.
b. The nature is the same to every living being that it is fair and just.
c. The nature is a set of laws that composed the Existence; they determine what are wrong and what are right for the living beings.
d. Moral is the right things in the law of nature. As the nature is just and fair, morals are the same and unchanging.
e. There is a set of morals that is clear and obvious. They are applied to all living beings that belong to the Existence.
f. Most importantly, the law of moral is not the views or concepts. Moral must lead to happiness that doesn’t need to hurt anything that has its own ego.
2. Ego is self identification made of a set of the fixed mental faculties exist on the physical body; however, ego is the body and the mind felt as oneness. An individual being has ego as it cannot distinguish the body and the mind completely. Superficially, an intelligent being can understand the mind and the body and can describe which is which. But as the body and the mind are combined as one, in certain deep levels, an ordinary intelligent being cannot reach to realize the way they are (science is improving to understand this).
3. Misperception: if the eye is not right, one may not see right. Ideological misperception is caused by the same knowledge we may have and the different views of different people which one uses as one’s own eyes in thoughts. Misperception is the cause of Misunderstanding. Mistakes are made very often and that provides a concept how we have misperception. I think misperception is a significant thing in the development of wisdom; by trying to correct the mistakes, we can have the right understandings that become the right knowledge as the ingredients or fuel to make a flame of wisdom.
4. Natural resistance of fixed egoism lost in complications of misperception: natural resistance is caused by pride, unbendable pride, bias, misperception and ignorance which can be understood as ego.

1. After buying them, how much Burma will become poorer
2. How they can be a guardian of the junta – if the junta can afford to
a. train the pilots and supporting teams
b. update and maintain
c. update the varieties whenever needed to face the developments against the rival technology, e.g. F16, new missile technology – which become available in the region
3. How much Burma will have to spend for basic maintenances
4. The total costs for 5 years (not sure if the junta can afford for more than five years)

Burma needs investments in economy, education, etc. What else can Burma do alternatively with such amount of money so huge? Why didn’t regime try creating jobs?

If the regime spent that money in the needs of economy wisely, it needs no appeals against international sanctions. But for now, sanctions must stay for goodness sake – or all income might end up in the air or on fire.

Overturning the bowl

Overturning the bowl is a symbolic phrase signifying the refusal to accept offerings from a particular person. The origin story for this transaction is
a variation on the origin story for Sg 8. The followers of Mettiya and Bhummaja incite Va.d.dha the Licchavi to accuse Ven. Dabba Mallaputta of having raped his wife. (They show no imagination at all and instruct him to phrase his accusation in the same terms they taught Mettiyaa Bhikkhunii in the story to Sg 8: "The quarter without dread, without harm, without danger, is (now) the quarter with dread, with harm, with danger. From where there was calm, there is (now) a storm-wind. The water, as it were, is ablaze. My wife has been raped by Master Dabba Mallaputta." ) The Buddha convenes a meeting of the Community, at which Ven. Dabba (who attained arahantship at the age of seven) states truthfully that, "Ever since I was born, I am not aware of having engaged in sexual intercourse even in a dream, much less
when awake." The Buddha then instructs the Community to overturn its bowl to Va.d.dha, so that none of the bhikkhus are to have communion with him. (This, according to the Commentary, means that none of the bhikkhus are to accept offerings from his household.) Ven. Ānanda, on his alms round the following day, stops off at Va.d.dha's house to inform him that the Community has overturned its bowl to him. On hearing this news, Va.d.dha collapses in a faint. When he recovers, he goes with his relatives to confess his wrong doing to the Buddha. The Buddha accepts his confession and tells the Community to turn its bowl upright for Va.d.dha, so that the bhikkhus may associate with him as before.

The Community, if it wants to, may overturn its bowl to a lay person endowed with the following eight qualities: He/she

strives for the bhikkhus' material loss,
strives for the bhikkhus' detriment,
strives for the bhikkhus' non-residence (i.e., so that they can't live in a certain place),
insults and reviles bhikkhus,
causes bhikkhus to split from bhikkhus;
speaks in dispraise of the Buddha,
speaks in dispraise of the Dhamma,
speaks in dispraise of the Sa"ngha.

The Commentary adds that a lay person who has done any one of these things qualifies to have the bowl overturned. There is no need for him/her to have done all eight.

Unlike other disciplinary transactions (and unlike most Community transactions in general), the object of the transaction does not need to be present in the meeting at which the transaction is performed. This is apparently what the Commentary means when it says that the transaction may be performed within or without the territory. In other words, the lay person does not need to be in the same territory where the meeting is held.

The procedure is this: The Community meets and agrees to the transaction statement, which (in a motion and proclamation) explains the lay person's wrong doing and announces that the Community is overturning its bowl to him/her, that there is to be no communion between him/her and the Community. (The word for communion, here as elsewhere, is sambhoga, which literally means "consuming together" or "sharing wealth." An interesting anthropological study could be written on the implications of this word's being used to describe a bhikkhu's accepting alms.) The Commentary adds that the Community should then inform other Communities that they, too, are not to accept alms or offerings from the household of the lay person in question. And, as the origin story shows, the lay person should be informed of the transaction.

If the lay person mends his/her ways (in other words, stops doing the action for which the bowl was overturned in the first place and does not start doing any of the other actions that are grounds for overturning the bowl) the Community may then turn its bowl upright. The procedure here is that the person in question dresses respectfully, goes to the Community, bows down, and with hands palm-to-palm over the heart makes a formal request to have the bowl turned upright. The Commentary adds that the person should state the request three times and then leave the hatthapaasa of the Community's meeting while the transaction statement uprighting the bowl is recited, although there is nothing in the Canon to indicate that this last step is necessary. After the recitation, the bhikkhus may again accept offerings at the person's house. None of the texts mention this point, but the Community would seem honor bound to notify any of the other Communities who were
informed of the bowl's original overturning that the bowl has now been set upright.

You and I

The first thing we recognise once we’re born is the feeling of I and I’m hungry, I’m tired, I feel pain and so on and so fort. And long after that, the baby starts to realise you also exist. Once these realisations take root in the mind, discrimination between you and I, or I’m not you and you’re not I, become more and more obvious, stronger, thicker, heavier, larger and even uglier (with pimples) as the practice is year after year and lifelong.

Ego is
actually just I. You is the affected, subordinate culprit. The more I becomes stronger, the more you is influenced and become nastier, more supportive to I to be stronger, but they become more and more emotionally competitive. They are like two boxers, two sides of warring people, feudal sporting teams, etc. that they need each others for success, glory, victory and the sense of existence; they need each other existence for companion. Without you and I, life can’t be the same as the way we know it is. They are time to time each others’ accomplices.

Actually, ego is not really a strong thing but its roots are as I and you provide the soil for its growth and regrowth and fertiliser that we naturally give it fertiliser and recycle the fertiliser we produced for it. Ego is not strong as we time to time do humanitarian works for others’ sake or we create the emotion of sympathy, love, agreement, empathy, happiness for others, enjoyment in others’ presence, etc.

Ego is not strong but like weed, it does grow back as quick as possible as it doesn’t lose its roots from supportive soil. But it is always spreading, again like weed. If you don’t take care of your mind (emotions) as the weed is spreading all over it, you will only have the bad tempers. The soil is not naturally supportive, although it gives fertiliser to ego and processes fertiliser – as it has lots of them. But when the mind is conditioned by ego, the soil becomes too supportive – like a caterpillar as a host to the growing baby wasp that is eating it inside out.

In this situation, the strength of ego is different in different emotions. The presence of the strength of ego in fear is so strong. And fear along can kill a person. But some people, or some creatures, are so aggressive that their egos are so strong that they live with anger most of the time. Likewise, some people have a lot of love and their egos strongly presence in their emotion of love – whether as a form of possessiveness or compassion. Isn’t it incredible to put compassion and ego as the same thing? But compassion is not ego but the ways individuals view it and possess it are to make them (compassion and ego) as though the same thing. That is the condition of mind.

Ego produces a substance that can be compared to intoxication. That substance can cause a condition like hallucination. What does intoxication do? It deludes the mind, the brain and the intelligence so the intoxicated people have to succumb to misconception, misinterpretation of what they see, hear or what comes out of their thought and the imbalance of emotion and physical activity that usually lead to a harmful event.

So it can be said that ego misinforms or filters information through its misinterpretation and that makes its hosts more egocentric.

To understand, I don’t need to give any example as I write in my view and as your read in yours. We see or do not see eye to eye on the same words we share as writer and readers although we both know they have the same meanings. My concept and your concept make them to be different but we know they don’t volunteer that. The arrangement of words may be beautiful but words cannot be treated like other objects used for art making. Literature can lead us to heaven or hell (literally) on earth.

View is the energy of intellects and concept is of the guessers, even if some concepts are near truth experience – like near death experience has brought a huge debate. Once you know the reality, both concept and view disappear, like thirst disappears after a good nice drink. But without concept or view, one can become unsustainable or it could be a feeling like memory loss – unlike Zen.

Extracting good feeling out of the clearing-concepts-out-of-confusion is maybe like being in the open ocean and thirsty but cannot drink. Without pure fresh water, one cannot drink properly. Yet ego is needed to find pure fresh water but one must be aware of the potential of ego and not to let it grow to the size one cannot control. It must not become the master but must be a servant, a tool, an aids, so it has to know its place or one has to know the place of one’s ego. And this is the capacity of the intelligent people – yet they have to be wise so they won’t be foolish. No capacity can develop itself without the persistent effort. Seeing pronouns as pronouns and reality as reality can make one wiser, I guess. After all, we’re just creatures so you and I mightn’t be too different.

We know the sun is there shining for billions of years but wether it rises or rises from the east is just a local colour. The east doesn’t exist in the space and we have no idea how the sun moves around the Milky Way. Well, who knows or who cares how long it takes for the sun to complete a full circle around its galaxy! And whether we need the sun at all is also a mystery – if there was no sun, organisms would be thriving in the warmer regions of the earth that the ice could be their sky; plants might not be green but they’d find a way to breathe carbon dioxide and cook their food and produce oxygen for higher intelligent creatures. By not knowing the reality, spirituality tends to concern about mere fantasy.

Whilst one has the emotion of concern about one’s spiritual wellbeing, one could end up in the whirlpool of pure fantasy. Life is so ordinary for a lot of people. Life is very demanding, costly and painful. Life seems to be very boring indeed. That enhances the need of fantasy or exaggerates the pleasure in fantasy. When the young fantasize romance, adults fantasize about desirable lifestyle and lots of people used to fantasize heaven and hell largely concerned to sensual pleasures than anything to do spiritual benefits. Imagination is not dangerous but it can be a shoot to grow up into additive fantasy. And that is how ego can manipulate me and you.

The truth is danger is present in every fantasy.

As ego produces a substance that is like intoxication, no wonder how real intoxicants can influence people. Although some people do not use drugs due to education they have, the natural tendency is different.

Kids tend to get injury often as they don’t know to avoid injury and do not have the strength to avoid them, like the adults can. Likewise, some people are more mature, thoughtful and able to understand things with both natural conscience and the intellects developed by good education.

And egocentric fantasy can lead to self-pity, grievances and crimes. And every crime leads the committer nowhere but regret.

Ego lets us to be short-sighted, impatient, and moody. Actually my ego is me and sometimes it’s like a storm and destroys my heart.

The core of the truth is I’m the EGO – Ego Glistened Optical-illusion, Ego Guided Order and Ego Gratifying Organism. And you are SELF – Self Engineered Little Folk.

The best part of it is, it’s manageable.

Theological Conflict

I don’t believe another messiah would come sooner into the existing influence and teaching of the previous messiah which are still effectively educating his followers and believers. If the new messiah is supposed to teach the same things, what for he should appear soon?

The reason is there will be fighting between the followers of existing messiah and the followers of the new. Human history is full of religious wars of a single religion within itself. An ideological conflict tends to occur among 1) the careless people, 2) the doubtful people, 3) the discontent and 4) the suppressed.

1. Careless people are forgetful, negligent and tend to make something to happen unintentionally or unnecessarily.
2. The doubtful people are usually thoughtful, (brainy and witty). They might be rather too careful that they might reach somewhere extreme beyond their capability. Their conclusion can become between right and wrong or neither. They’re the one who mishit the target with a great desire to hit it. They are the ones in the society who cannot accept the existing reality of traditional establishments, whether they know the true reality, whether they can give a better thing to humanity, but they like to find their own.
3. The discontent ones want more. They tent to be needy that the existing amounts are not necessarily enough for them. They tent to be neglecting the existing valuable as they long for what do not exist or cannot exist. They’re the ones who are on a big ship and do not know how to sail it that they are waiting for another ship to come.
4. The condition of the suppressed is the clearest. They don’t have a chance to maintain their culture. If that condition is severely extreme, they could even lose themselves all together and extinct. Or if the suppressing are the ones they respected, they’d find a new way to follow; every religion had at least a revolution of its own but the same were the pains of the people embedded in the causes of these revolutions.
Among each of these four different kinds, of course, smaller similarities can be categorised. Leave the details.

So I don’t believe that the arrival of the next messiah is impending.

If I have to analyse why the people are wishing the coming of a messiah, how should I think?
1. Isn’t the existing messages and teaching of the previous messiah enough?
2. Didn’t he teach to everyone and leave his teaching to every new generation?

Certainly, no messiah can rescue all beings but a few. Obviously, a messiah is not God. Wrongly, people might assume somebody was great and mistook him as messiah even if he was against existing faiths of his time.

Religions preach for peace; however, by contrary, the world is at war. In this situation, another messiah can only make the situation worse by dividing a people into two – one group is supposed to become atheists by disbelief to him.

1. There are some people who do not want to comply with the good teachings but the bad.
2. There are some who do not want to work but want liberation if others will ever get it – if that is kind of fulfilling the lusts that always occupy their minds. But they don’t want to hear if the liberation is about restriction of the freedom of wildness.
3. And there are people who know religions very well and become to disrespect them. Among them, two different groups emerge. One is the knowledgeable and wise people who rather respect ethics, morality and humanity and the other is the ones using a religion for their gains as preying on the ignorant – financially, sexually, etc.

I’m lucky, particularly in religious study, that I became to realise to learn from at least their foundations but not sufficiently lucky. I have the chance to compare them with no bias and that’s what I want to do. However, I’d only like to talk about the significances in the religions as sharing the universal tolerance.

Mythology of Sin

Buddhism: once the ancestors of mankind were godlike creatures that they had rays shining their environs without day or night where they travelled by flight like the clouds can float in the air. Their food was joy that when they needed, they just had to concentrate on joy. That was before they started eating the soil which existed underneath them. It was started by somebody who couldn’t control his desire that emerged from seeing the milky soil so long and wanted to test its taste. By eating so, their bodies become with holes and tunnels that what went in had to come out from the other end and the appearances of male and female became obvious. The then the soil was like milk cream that they didn’t need plants to absorb the nutrients and make edible fruits, grains, etc but the soil itself was edible. By seeing each others as male and female, there happened pleasure in it and lust as the consequence. And somebody started to touch somebody different thus understood the pleasure of touching and sensuality started to influence them…

In the Bible, Adam and Eve ate the sin fruit that was prohibited by God.

frustrating mistakes

...after writing an article for two days, i was exhausted and rushed into sending it to various groups and activists. the next day, i read the article in a group digest and found the first mistake. instead of one hundred thousands and more, i wrote one hundred more... well, this is very serious mistake i have done in this month...

isn't it frustration to find out you made such glaring mistake after you wrote long and thoughtful article you did all your best to indicate for good sake?

actually, i only went through editing once, only once, and did a significant changes. however, i can't understand how i missed such thing everyone knows the whole world knows!!!

the second mistake is PTTEP that i missed the P. PTTE(Thai petrolian company) still makes sense i guess.

my mind was possessed by thoughts and blanks of names and numbers... unfortunately. i try to get the best idea i ever came through others' writings and i do my conclusion as an idea. my idea is simply based on my reading and information but i try to give some nut-cracking thoughts to readers.

I hope they enjoy my writing with critical thinking of their own to correct the mistakes they come through my writings...

I admit i make mistake not only once but again and again unprofessionally...


Frustration

The year 2008 is stained by a historically unprecedented cruelty.

The junta of Burma has negligently let the a worst cyclone to claim a hundred (thousands) and more lives of the ordinary civilians and deliberately let suffer by depriving the survivors from aids, helps and the sympathy of the world community.

The volunteer aid workers have been denied from reaching to the people who are desperately needing food, shelter and all available helps.

The worst thing is yet some of the Burmese aid workers affectively volunteering to help were arrested by the authority. Where they are detained and how long to be detained are not certain – affectively prevented their moral contributions to the neediest people in Burma. Yet this doesn’t highlight the reliability of the UN that it is forced to spend a lot on transportation and such operation.

The UN has to endure silence or existing privileges given by the generals will certainly be stormed.

The UN needs the cooperation of the Burmese both citizens and responsible authorities to work effectively inside Burma.

Showing its decaying gums is dangerous to all UN mission inside Burma as this happened during late saffron revolution that a toothless aged tiger must accept its inferior position inside unfamiliar territory, or so-called sovereignty, controlled by the junta.

As usual for 20 years, the business among the cronies is ongoing unaffected by cyclone Nargis.

Well, the condition is ‘not to be politicized’ but make money before the good time ends. Before freedom is replanted, this is just a good time for those partnering the generals who see the entire Burma is as if their own backyard to have the right to decide who can come and cannot and who, or which ethnics, can thrive or not.

But amid global pressure as it seems, the junta has done another trick from its schoolbook.

Now it cannot replace the name of the country with another funny name, like Myan = fast and mar = hard and strong, it has removed some juniors bridging between the rich top and the rotten substructures as if the top generals were still innocent.

We have had enough of the innocent cards played by the generals since the late general Ne Win – as if the top generals weren’t aware of what happening around the country that they weren’t informed or misinformed by the concerned authorities bridging between them and the rest of population. (This is a way they solve a real crisis and later to happen again. Or they can kill anybody whether a monk or a general.)

If they cannot manage to be informed properly as they claim, then what are they capable of – apart from 20 year long corruption they have created and kept as their constitution – to build a better society? We don’t want any ignorant to manage our country.

We simply do not need incompetent uneducated people to destroy our country and make everything agony through suppression, murder, rape, bullying, robbing, stealing and cruel civil war with the reason of saving the country. We just need nobody who knows just that.

It’s indeed enough and no more; they should never use those same tricks as not working on everybody but they use it anyway by overwhelming voices – the louder the better. So they need helps and a country has just praised them for something else.

Than Shwe is not a leader by coup. He didn’t save anything but only what he has stolen from the people for his unique plutocracy that even built his royal capital.

He’s just a robber, not a people leader like King Anoratha, Queen Mi Sao-bu, General Aung San, his daughter Aung San Suu kyi, Bo Mya, Bado Manshar, etc. His self-serving character cannot be compared to U Thor Ka, Ko Min Ko Naing, Ma Phu Phu Thin, Ma Su Su Nway, Ko Zargana, Ko Kyaw Thu etc certainly many, many more.

We have a lot of good political leaders and great social leaders. We want them to govern democratic Burma. Without brutal military rule of these culprits, we’ll be definitely better off.

Whoever worshipping that cruel, arrogant and selfish person are as much crazy and selfish.

He cannot wash his face by sacking his juniors. We all know about both of his murders in Depayin event and Saffron Revolution. Not just his hands are bloody but his entire body is fishy. Still many aid workers are detained. If he were really innocent, why doesn’t let them go free and work for the cyclone victims?

Only idiots will believe his actions had good merit. Only or his mouthpiece will support him and his bloody actions.

For good merits:
1. Who will ask him to admit his constitutional referendum is a fake?
2. Who will ask him that he must accept the international helps to reach to the victims?
3. Who will ask him that he must start negotiation with all groups and disperse his thuggish USDA?
4. Who will ask him that he must accept the NLD to participate in all political activities with freedom of right campaign?
5. Who will ask him that now he must allow the free media to Burmese people?

Well, the list is long so the brief is we all Burmese people must have all freedoms, universal rights, free judiciary system and democratic governance with fairness as its principle,

He earns about 100 million dollars a month from selling gas to Thailand. Why doesn’t he use that money to help the victims? Where is that money if not in his own bank account in Singapore or elsewhere? Why doesn’t the world ask him directly at his face to use these moneys for good when he asked for 11 billion dollars from donors? What about next time he raise his greed? Good to India for 84 million dollars but I will only thank them when 4 million dollars reach the needy people. But who will pay back the rest of 80 millions or so?

Certainly there will no helps from the world ever be enough as they have to pass through the multi layered filters of the junta. 100 millions alone might have been sufficient in some extent if the junta let all international aid workers to work freely.

Certainly we have to remove this man and his associates in Burma from power or worse will come.

Whatever possible to bring them down, it’s desirable! Whether it’s a long battle or short assassinations, we cannot win with UN’s peace talks that have taken 15 years or more but some kinds of brute force that can finish decisively. It could be a mess if a ware is ever fought in the middle of urban community but it can’t be messier than the effects of cyclone Nargis and the junta’s cold heart.

The weakness of the UN is China and its blatant attempt to play regional super power game. Much sympathy and sadness to the earthquake victims but the government of China just deludes our emotions.

Also regional governments supporting the junta are the softer weakness of the UN. In this sense, the rule of the majority (governments) is not elegant in South East Asia.

Don’t forget that Japan was one of the most important income providers to the junta until 1995 or so. As now China is most important to deal with the UN and it’s a global victor, to get complete trust of China, the junta showed how it saw Japan by killing a Japanese journalist and until now bluntly no apology or worse Japan has received only po-faced laughter.

Simply Japan is a dumpee now as China has won the solid reliance of the junta completely and directly that it is the sole reliable alliance for their survival. But the junta is not alone.

Japan will be always a loser in the eyes of the junta as long as they exist even if it gave 11 billion dollars now to the generals to buy some words of apology or so. But to be historically sad, then, now and also in the future, its contribution to the destroying the democratic hope during that time will be remembered forever especially among the suppressed Burmese people who had admired the achievements of Japanese people.

What about Thailand? Thanks but what made Thailand to be better off by the PM visit as the cyclone victims have to suffer now anyway? Was his visit for them or Gas supplies to be more certain? Certainly we haven’t heard any jeer from any international human right groups yet for recent achievement of the PTTE.

Soon there will be another test on the integrity of ASEAN and UN in the meeting of ASEAN.

If there is no question raised to the junta and the junta needs to answer no question at all the way it has handled the crises, political arrests and the detentions of aid workers for the cyclone survivors, I don’t know what the 21st century is for in terms of human rights and freedoms.

After frustrating about regional game, we have to see our direct failure as well.

We have decided not to cooperate with the junta as the monks have boycotted everyone working for the junta. It seems we have forgotten this within half a year. There are people who haven’t received information about such resolution and about this boycott I guess. Or there must be some minorities who still want to trust the junta and get cheated again, and again ... and some of them have fallen from disgraceful grace. Not everyone voted for the junta but some clearly did.

Well, internal politics has no direct threat to the junta, except some small groups of activists with respectable bravery, as it has to rely on the majority power that the power to topple the junta is the people themselves.

As the people are easily can be defeated mentally as being under tight suppressions and have absolutely become cowardly as no hope they can see on the horizon that the side of the junta is clearly reinforced and now decisively more powerful both politically and financially, even the UN itself dears not speak out, although they’ve disgusted the military generals like dog shit they’ve stepped on accidentally that is still wet and keep smelling for twenty years (but loved by some people anyway), how can they become real power for their own freedoms?

If the people are determined, this is what the leaders have to do – determination with clear awareness, they will certainly isolate the junta and its USDA thugs, killers and thieves; they won’t just isolate these selfish inhumane bootlicking dogs but also hit them back in broad daylight or in the dark with whatever available, not fear of been arrested or tortured or whatever.

If the people have courage for freedom, they will certainly help each others, sacrifice for each others and hide the activists from inhumane treatment.

It’s true that easy to say than done as to work with the people unknown to each others who’s who in desperate time. If so, people are certainly not ready to become powerful enough to become as one force to shatter the junta completely.
